Continuum of Technology Maturity

Capacity Building through Technology

The GroundWork group Continuum of Technology Maturity is our instrument designed to help nonprofits identify all of their business functions that can be further enhanced through better use of technology. We review 53 business elements to measure how nonprofits use technology tools to manage the nine core business functions of Strategic Planning, Marketing, Constituent Management, Communications, Fundraising, Service Delivery, Reporting, Day-to-Day Operations and Training & Education.

Each business function is rated. The goal is to have all 53 elements in either the Standard or Advanced levels of technology maturity.

AT RISK
Only the most basic technology is being utilized. Nonprofits with a majority of their business elements at this lowest level are at risk of system break-down, data loss, limited visibility in the community and reduced ability to serve clients.

CORE
Nonprofits with a majority of business elements at this level have the necessary technology for core functionality, but improvements can boost capacity to serve and efficiency.

STANDARD
Nonprofits at this level of technology maturity have sophisticated tools that maximize the efficiency of their daily operations and help them reach increased numbers of clients.

ADVANCED
While difficult to attain, nonprofits at this level strategically leverage technology across all business functions. They have the technical capability to serve their clients, manage their data, raise money, communicate their messages and conduct daily operations in the most effective and secure manner.
